Push for Skateparks

The Gulf Coast Skateparks Association (GCSA) just wrapped up an incredible event on April 5th that showcased the heart of our mission—bringing people together through skateboarding and community action. The Push for Skateparks event was more than just a skate session; it was a celebration of culture, passion, and a bold step forward for skateboarding in Jackson County, Mississippi.

The main goal? To officially launch the effort to build a skatepark in St. Martin—marking a historic moment, as it's the first major county-level initiative for skateboarding in over 20 years, following the construction of the Pascagoula Skatepark.

Originally scheduled for March 29th, the event was postponed due to severe weather concerns. But what could have been a setback became an opportunity. Thanks to the hard work of Jackson County Parks and Recreation and GCSA, the additional week allowed us to expand outreach and build more momentum. And it paid off—we welcomed over 300 attendees to the event throughout the day.

The day kicked off with our skate mentors—experienced, passionate skaters—who took a group of a dozen enthusiastic kids under their wings. With one-on-one guidance, the young riders quickly picked up the basics, and by the time the youth contest rolled around, they were ready to shine. Each participant brought their energy and individuality to the contest, earning prizes and tons of cheers from the crowd. Congratulations to our youth skate contest winners: 3rd place – Gavin, 2nd place – Andrew, and 1st place – Anders! 🏆🎉

Next up, the adults took the spotlight. Twenty skaters stepped up for the adult contest, each riding not just for fun, but for a cause: to support our grassroots, DIY community-built skatepark. This effort is about more than just ramps and rails—it's about building a case for a permanent concrete facility by showing community involvement, demand, and dedication.

Congrats to the winners of the adult contest!
🥉 3rd Place – Andrew Buras
🥈 2nd Place – Cody Lacoste
🥇 1st Place – Alex Gelacio

The energy throughout the day was electric, and the impact was tangible. By the end of the event, we had raised $1,200 toward our mission—funds that will help us advocate for accessible, safe, and professionally built skateparks along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

And we’re not stopping there. Our online community survey has received over 100 responses filled with ideas, input, and support from residents of St. Martin and beyond. This feedback is critical in shaping a skatepark that reflects the needs and dreams of the people who will use it.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible sponsors from our local community who made the Push for Skateparks event possible through their generous support and charitable donations.

In addition, we want to give a massive thank you to the 26 dedicated volunteers who stepped up to make this event a true success. Your time, energy, and enthusiasm brought our vision to life and helped create an amazing experience for everyone who attended.

We want to extend a very special thank you to Matt Hosey, Project Manager for Jackson County, and DJ Pulley, Parks and Recreation Director for Jackson County. Their belief in this initiative and unwavering support were instrumental in making the Push for Skateparks event a resounding success.

Matt and DJ worked tirelessly behind the scenes—coordinating logistics, navigating challenges, and ensuring every detail aligned with the vision of a better future for our skateboarding community. Their dedication goes far beyond just planning an event; it reflects a genuine commitment to providing meaningful opportunities for the youth of Jackson County.

Because of their leadership and passion, we’re not just hosting events—we're building momentum, creating safe and inspiring spaces for skaters, and setting the foundation for a new generation of riders to thrive.

Thank you, Matt and DJ, for your partnership, your perseverance, and for believing in the power of skateboarding to transform lives and strengthen communities.

Special thanks to the 7 skate mentors who generously shared their time and skills with the next generation of skaters. Your passion and patience during the lessons inspired confidence and joy in every young rider who took part.

We’re also incredibly grateful to the concessions crew of 4, who kept everyone fueled and refreshed throughout the day. Your hard work behind the scenes made a big impact and kept the good vibes going.

And to the 15 general support staff who handled everything from setup to tear down, crowd coordination to logistics—thank you. Your efforts were the backbone of the event, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

Together, this volunteer team embodied the true spirit of community. We are beyond thankful for your commitment, and we're proud to have you as part of the Gulf Coast Skateparks Association family.

A huge shoutout to Jackson County, Shane Hard Insurance, Ya Ya's Biloxi, Missihippie, Absolutely Screen Printing, Heartless Skate Shop, and Monster Energy. Your contributions helped bring our vision to life—providing an unforgettable day for skaters of all ages and pushing forward the dream of a new skatepark in St. Martin.

Your support fuels more than just events—it fuels community, creativity, and connection. Thank you for believing in the power of skateboarding and standing behind our mission to build a stronger, more vibrant Gulf Coast skate scene.

The Push for Skateparks event was a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together with purpose. We're not just building skateparks—we’re building community, creating legacy, and giving the next generation of skaters a place to grow, thrive, and roll forward.

Let’s keep the momentum going. The wave has started—let’s ride it all the way to a future filled with more parks, more passion, and more possibilities.
